Dumbass/smartass
Important note: there's a game-crashing bug in the game that is triggered by doing multiple clicks in very quick succession when selecting dialogue options. We'll fix it when the jam voting period is over, in the meantime keep that in mind when playing!
-------------------------
Dumbass/smartass is a short pixel-art point & click adventure made for the $108 Adventure Game Challenge. It's a surreal, somewhat existential story about language barriers, holograms, and cognitive bias.
No AI has been used in the development of this game. Made by humans for humans and/or donkeys.
How to play
The game can be played with a mouse (and optionally keyboard for extra shortcuts) or with touch controls. The web version can be played on phones and tablets!
The state of the game can be saved at any time outside of dialogues and cut-scenes.
Mouse controls
- The game uses one button only, both left and right mouse clicks behave the same
- The cursor changes shape on objects that can be interacted with by clicking on them
- Clicking on non-interactable objects will make the character move towards them
- Clicking on an inventory item will select it and change the cursor into the item. Click on other objects in the game to use the selected item on them
Keyboard shortcuts
- F1: open menu (can be opened with the mouse using the cog icon on the top right)
- I: open inventory (can be opened with the mouse using the icon on the bottom right)
- . (period key): skip a line of dialogue (skipping with mouse clicks can be enabled from the settings)
- ESC or SPACE: skip cutscene (only available when logo is flashing on the bottom left corner)
Touch controls
- Swipe with two fingers to skip a line of dialogue
- Hold down three fingers to skip cutscenes
- By default the touch controls are relative: drag a finger around to move the cursor relative to its current position, tap to click
- If relative mode is disabled from the settings, tapping once will move the cursor to the finger position and a double tap will click
- Inside the menu a single tap is always considered a click!

Awesome! Great storytelling, sense of humour and puzzles.
Really cool! One of my favourites so far. Perfect interpretation of the theme, great art, great puzzles. Loved it.
I loved everything from this one. Graphics, plot, puzzles, writing, the way the theme was followed... flawless game for me.
Got stuck solving the God of Pain puzzle, tried everything but can't seem to figure it out!
Spoiler
Have you already figured out how to hit the human’s face?
Yup I figured it out cheers! Was worth it just to see the 2001 ending 😵💫
Even when you know how to hit the human's face, what next? I also tried not hitting the teeth to maybe knock him out so "the pain goes away", didn't help either. I'm also at a loss what to do about the god of deceit, also tried manipulating the cave painting, doesn't work either :(
Spoiler
For pain: you’re on the right track trying not to aim for his teeth, but you were also on the right track trying to hit the tooth that hurts. Let me know if you need a more specific hint.
For deceit: did you talk to the hologram about it?
I need a more specific hint for pain. Thank you :)
For deceit: Yes to your question. I tried manipulating the cave painting, so the model for the god of deceit might resemble the "replica" but nope. Do I miss an item that I should have?
Spoiler
Pain: what if the pain is caused by a tooth, rather than being a toothache?
Deceit: you have all the objects you need. You only need to add something to the projection on the wall to make it look like the painting behind the bush.
The plot and puzzles are absolutely hee-haw-larious! I also love the great graphics! Only the control was a bit confusing, but I got used to it! Keep on your good work!
Thanks! What was it about the controls that you found confusing?
It was confusing first that I couldn't skip the dialogues, but I was able to set in the settings that dialogues can be skipped with the left mouse button. Also, after selecting an inventory item, I had to click on the bag again to get the mouse cursor back.
Very clever and funny. Loved the reference to 2001 A Space Odissey.
Done! There are two really hilarious moments (tooth & ending). Lovely art. The weird tune is a plus!
No Uncle Lee :(
This caught me by surprise. Great job! I loved the puzzles and the art.
